Tigran Petrosian – 80
Today, on the 17th of June, 2009 one of the most significant persons of chess history, Tigran Petrosian, would be celebrating his 80th anniversary. Petrosian is one of the most talented son of the Armenian people. His sport achievements are very exclusive. The “Iron Tigran” was World Chess Champion for six years (1963-1969). He achieved Soviet Union champion title for 4 times and Armenian Champion title for 3 times. Petrosian was 9-time Olympic champion, European 8-time champion, International Grandmaster, Honoured sport Master, Honoured worker of sport and physical culture of Armenia.
Tigran Petrosian’s magnificent victories brought great spur for the development of the Armenian chess. The followers of Petrosian have become 2-time Olympic champions. Nowadays, Armenia is one of the most powerful chess countries in the world, Armenian chess-players become winners of strongest tournaments, Armenia is organizing International honourable tournaments. Tigran Petrosian and his testamented wonderful traditions played a hugh and invaluable role in achieving all this.
Armenian people revere Tigran Petrosian’s memory. One of the largest streets of the capital is named after this genius chess-player. There are 3 monuments in Armenia dedicated to Tigran Petrosian: two of them are located in Yerevan and the third one is in Aparan: in the central square named after Petrosian. Chess House, placed in the heart of Yerevan, was also named after T.Petrosian. Many great tournaments dedicated to Tigran Petrosian have been organized in Armenia. In the coming August, when the 25th year of Tigran Petrosyan’s death is commemorated, Jermuk will host FIDE Grand Prix tournament with 14 strongest Grandmasters to commemorate T.Petrosian.
