Lilit Mkrtchian won Anna Gasik (Poland) with 1.5:0.5 score at the World Women’s Championship, Nalchik and appeared in the third round.

Hrant Melkumyan Fulfilled His Third Norm


19-year-old Hrant Melkumyan fulfilled his third norm at the World Youth Chess Championship in Gaziantep, Turkey. This is Hrant’s third success. He had fulfilled the other norms at Mazov Chess Festival (Poland 2007) and at the 4th Rektor Cup (Belgorod, Russia 2008).

Presidential Board of FIDE awarded international titles to Armenian three representatives.

 

Avetik Grigoryan received Grandmaster title, David Kalashian: international title and Norayr Kalantaryan: FIDE Arbiter.

Tigran Petrosian’s success


Grandmaster Tigran L.Petrosian scored 5 points of 6 at Las Vegas Tournament, USA and shared 1-6 places with Grandmasters Kamsky (USA), Fressinet (France), Kolev (Bulgary), International Masters Finegold and Friedel (USA).

Yerevan bids farewell to Karen Asrian


On June 11 Yerevan said farewell to the Armenian champion and Turin Chess Olympiad gold medalist Karen Asrian.

RA president Serzh Sargsyan, Chairman of the RA National Assembly Tigran Torosyan, RA Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, deputies of National Assembly, ministers, renowned artists, leaders of NGOs, journalists, and numerous chess players and citizens alike were present at the burial ceremony held at the Tigran Petrosian chess house.  

Participants of the international tournament in Yerevan in solidarity with many Armenian chess players also paid their tribute of respect to their friend, colleague, and prominent grandmaster.

Despite the heavy rain thousands of people bid their last farewells to Karen Asrian at the Yerevan cemetery.

Karen Asrian's Untimely Death 

It is with great sadness and difficulty we report to you that yesterday, June 9, Armenian Grandmaster Karen Asrian passed away. He was 28 years old. The games of "Chess Giants Yerevan 2008" tournament started late after a moment of silence in GM Asrian's memory.

Triumph in the "Children of Chernobyl" Olympiad

The Armenian youth team (Robert Aghasaryan, Karen Grigoryan, Khachatur Yeranyan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Maria Gevorgyan and trainer: Arshak Ramazyan) took the first place at the "Children of Chernobyl" Olympiad which was held in Anapa, Russia. Every year this International festival is organazing by Anatoly Karpov.
