Armenian Grandmasters’ Success in Chicago
Grandmasters Varuzhan Akobian (USA) and Tigran L.Petrosian (Armenia) are a success in an open tournament held in Chicago, USA. Having gained 5.5 points of 7, they shared 1-3 places with American Grandmaster Nakamura. Afterward, two Armenian chess players played blitz tie-break where Akobian defeated Petrosian and won the tournament. Tigran L.Petrosian took the second prize.

Samvel Ter-Sahakyan’s Grandmaster Norm 14-year-old Samvel Ter-Sahakyan succeeded at the 9th European Individual Championship, Plovdiv. He fulfilled a Grandmaster norm. According to FIDE handbook, such achievement considers to be as a double norm in the continental championships. Ter-Sahakyan achieved his first Grandmaster norm at the 68th Armenian Championship, January 2008. After giving Grandmaster title, Samvel will be the young Grandmaster in the Armenian History.

Tournament in Gyumri The Chess Academy of Armenia, on behalf of the Chess Federation of Armenia, is organizing an International tournament of a Category X from 25 April to 6 May in the town of Gyumri. 12 participants from Armenia, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine will compete in Round Robin Tournament. “Gyumri Beer-Malt Factory” and “YUMS” LLC are the sponsors of the tournament too.

Vladimir Akopian is a Russian Team Champion Grandmaster Vladimir Akopian earned champion title as a member of Ural at the Russian Team Championship 2008. The championship was held in the suburbs of Dagomys, Sochi.

Gabriel Sargissian took the third prize
Grandmaster Gabriel Sargissian scored 4.5 out of 7 and took the third place at the Ruy Lopez tournament, Merida, Spain. With 5.5 points Michael Adams won the tournament.

Trainers' board decisionThe trainers’ board of the chess federation discussed several matters regarding the Armenian boys and girls championships. The board decided to create an application form where participants’ national ratings and their trainers’ full names should be filled. The board concluded that the participants’ national rating should be decreased with 10 points if they miss the game with no excusing reason or they leave the tournament.
The board also resolved that all the trainers and parents should leave the play hall after 5 minutes from the beginning of the game.

Zaven Andriasian at TOP 4 Zaven Andriasian succeeded at the famous ICC blitz tournament where several dozen grandmasters were participating. At first Zaven won the selective tournament in his subgroup and entered the list of 32 strongest participants. They were playing in Nockout system and Andriasian won 3 games. He defeated the previous US champion Hikaru Nakamura. Only in the semifinal Andriasian was defeated by GM Ronen Har-Zvi (Israel) and shared 3-4 places.
ICC tournament winner became Jorge Sammour-Hasbun.

International Titles for Armenian Chess Players FIDE has given international titles to some Armenian chess players.
Arman Hayrapetian and Yuri Hambardzumyan have gained International Master titles. Gevorg Harutjunyan and Hovik Hayrapetian have accordingly been titled as International Grandmaster and International Master. According to FIDE handbook, these two chess players will use their titles when their ratings are 2500 and 2400 consequently.

Mkrtchian - Krush Match in Chicago Four round-match between two-time US champion Irina Krush and four-time Armenian champion Lilit Mkrtchian will be held 31 March to 3 April, Chicago, USA. This friendly match is being organized by the North American Chess Association.
