Melkumyan and Grigoryan Have Fulfilled Grandmaster’s Norm
Young chess players Hrant Melkumyan and Avetik Grigoryan fulfilled a Grandmaster’s norm in Belgorod, Russia. Grigoryan has gained his third norm and Melkumyan has gained his second norm. Melkumyan scored 7.5 out of 9 points and won the tournament. Grigoryan shared II-III places with 6.5 points.

Gevorg Harutunian’s Success Young chess player Gevorg Harutunian scored of 6/9 at the “Rector Cup” tournament in Kharkov, Ukraine and shared 1-3 places with GM Mikhail Brodsky and IM Vladimir Onischuk.

Grandmasters Tigran L.Petrosian and Tigran Kotanjian became the champions in Iran Club Championship as a member of Rahan.
Karen Asrian is an Iran Club Cup Winner 2008 Grandmaster Karen Asrian’s team became the Club Cup holder of Iran.

New International Norms of Armenian Chess Players
Avetik Grogoryan has fulfilled International Grandmaster’s norm in Urmia, Iran. Liana Aghabekian has fulfilled Women International Master’s norm in Urmia, Iran. They both gained their second norms.
David Kalashian fulfilled his third Grandmaster’s norm at Aeroflot Open 2008 in Moscow.

Gibraltar Festival GM Tigran L. Petrosian scored of 7/10 points at the great open in Gibraltar. GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) showed the same result. Armenian Grandmasters finished one point behind Grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Bu Xiangzhi (China). The first place took Nakamura after play off.

Levon Aronian at the Grand Slam Tournament 2-17 September, 2008, Spain Levon Aronian, as the winner of Corus Wijk aan Zee, received an invitation to the final tournament of the Grand Slam which will take place during 2-17 September, 2008 in Bilbao, Spain. The winners of Morelia/Linares, Sofia and Mexico tournaments and two invited grandmasters will also play in Bilbao.

Grandmasters Vladimir Akopian, Karen Asrian, Artashes Minasian, Zaven Andriasian, Elina Danielian and some other Armenian chess players will participate in Moscow Open which will be held during 2-10 February, in the capital of Russia.

Levon Aronian became the champion of Wijk aan Zee Levon Aronian won the main tournament of Corus festival which was held in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. Aronian scored of 8/11, equal first with Magnus Carlsen but edged out the young Norweigan on Berger system tiebreak points. Sergey Movsesian won the B tournament of the festival, and will thus play in the "A" group next year.

Gevorg Harutunian – champion of the Armenian rapid chess, 2008 Armenian rapid chess championship 2008 was held in Yerevan. Gevorg Harutunian became the champion with 7/9 points. Zaven Andriasian and Hrant Melkumyan accordingly took second and third places with 6.5/9 points.
